5 Ways to Refresh Your Closet

I'm certain at some point you've opened your closet door and thought "Ugh, I hate everything" or, my personal favorite, "I have nothing to wear!" And you just feel stuck, right? When I have those moments the only thing left to do is get creative and seek inspiration. I find myself coming back time and time again to the same ways to refresh and remix my closet. Yes, there are plenty of other options, but these are the ones that inspire me when I'm in a wardrobe rut.

One of the easiest ways to change up a look or add a pop of color is a belt. Try a wide belt with maxi dresses and skinny belts with shorter shifts. They're also a great way to switch up a classic jeans/tee look. Stock up on fun colors and patterns - that will help add a fresh spin to your outfits. Stores like Old Navy, American Eagle, and NY&Co usually have a great selection at great prices. (Find inspiration here)

A little unexpected but certainly a great way to freshen up outerwear or even a simple tank, corsages (or brooches) can easily make a statement on their own. Just make sure to go light on other accessories. I think they're fun and not an accessory that we gravitate towards every day. The one above is from Initials, Inc. (last seen here) but ban.do also has some great options!

Stocking up on basics is essential to being able to remix your wardrobe (probably should've listed this one first!). Chambray blouses, basic (solid) tees/tanks, white blouses - all of these pieces can be used to create a totally different look simply by adding accessories and switching up the bottoms you wear. (Find inspiration here and here)

I've recently taken quite a liking to mixing prints and patterns, and believe me, it's a great way to refresh the pieces you already have. You would be surprised how differently a piece can look simply by pairing it with a complementary print. It's a little intimidating at first, but once you've done it a few times, you'll be a pro. (Find inspiration here, here, and here)

Finally, let's talk about jewelry - one of the most obvious tricks for refreshing your closet. A different piece of jewelry (or combination of jewelry) can make an outfit new and unexpected. My advice is to stock up on pieces that can be easily layered (see this outfit) and seek out unique, bold pieces that make a statement (see this outfit).

Such great tips! I have a big ivory corsage that I got at Anthro. I love to wear a slim black skirt and black top and add a little something special with the corsage!

I have gotten sme pretty amazing brooches from my late grandmother... I had no idea people were actually wearing them nowadays! I may have to go out of my comfort zone and try them out! :)

Great tips, Julie!

I have a question for you though: I'm currently trying to figure out how to remix a black one-shoulder cocktail dress for a wedding I have next month. In the past, I've worn it with gold heels and gold jewelry, as well as nude heels and pearls, but now I want to do something bright, summery and fun. I just don't know *what* to wear though...any thoughts? I'm totally open to any suggestions you may have!
