Five Things

Image: Nasty Gal via The Cool Hour

This little blog game called Five Things has been popping up everywhere. I love learning more about fellow bloggers so I thought I would jump on board, share five facts about me, and pass the torch to several of my favorite ladies. Read on to learn just how crazy I really am more about me and feel free to play along in the comments!

**

1. I really love alone/me time. I know this may be true for lots of you, but I mean this to the extreme. I don't mind being home on a Friday night eating a bowl of cereal, watching NCIS reruns. I've never had the need to have a boyfriend all the time or tons of friends. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of friends - but a very small core group that I consider my live-and-die girlfriends. Maybe it's being an only child and having to entertain myself when I was younger or spending lots of time around adults. Either way, I'm content being the crazy dog lady.

2. I like things none of my friends like. I went to see a double feature of To Rome with Love and Moonrise Kingdom by myself. Every time I go to DC or New York, I have an urge to spend an entire day (or days) wandering from one museum to another. Flea markets, thrift shops (cue the song), and secondhand stores are my jam. I'm the girl whose friends say to her, "It's very you, Julie" when I pull the jumpsuit off the rack at T.J. Maxx. However, my friends have come to appreciate these things that I love and every now and then they'll humor me.

3. I will eat anything once. I've tried some pretty crazy food in my twenty-six years - octopus, turtle soup, smoked eel, alligator cheesecake, bacon-wrapped anything - the list goes on. I love trying unique dishes and embrace the opportunity every chance I get. The alligator cheesecake happened at Jacques Imo's in New Orleans a couple years ago when I was visiting Trish. It's definitely been my favorite "you ate what?!?" food experience.

4. I'm incredibly competitive. This is more of a personal competition than openly challenging someone to a one-on-one showdown or something. I've always put so much pressure on myself to be the best. My parents never put lofty expectations on me - I put them on myself (and lots of them). It wasn't until college that I realized how awful it made me feel to always have these personal goals I was trying to achieve. Goals are great and necessary, but mine were exhausting. I'm still competitive but have learned to manage it in a much healthier, productive way.

5. I think about "what ifs" more than I should. What if I'd done this? What if I'd done that? What if I'd majored in this? What's if I'd gone there? As much as I try, I find it very hard to live in the moment. I think ahead, I think back, I think about tomorrow - I can't get out of my own head and it gets so tiring. And the worst part, I feel like everyone else is embracing today and I'm busy creating a five-year plan. Please tell me you're not all seizing the day! (If so, then refer to #4 to know how I feel about it.)

I'm tagging the ladies I'm collaborating with for the style project we're launching on Friday:
Michelle // Shelby // Tracy // Katie // Alex

Hope you'll play along, girls!

You sound absolutely lovely. But then I knew that already :)

I LOVE alone time too, I have friends who literally cannot be alone (and they're parents too so you'd think they yearn for a little alone time!!)....a week-end by myself would be my idea of bliss :)

Loved reading this :) XX

Love this, I too love to sit at home on a Friday night alone. It doesn't bother me one bit.

It's so fun to read about bloggers. Alligator cheesecake! I've been to Jacques-Imo's several times but certainly never tried that. :) I'm a vegetarian so it's trickier to try impressively weird things. When I was in China, though, I saw some crazy "food" items at the night market . . . including SEAHORSES on a skewer fried in hot oil! Not to mention cockroaches, silkworms, goat intestines, etc. Shudder!

You are not alone with #5 - I am absolutely the same way and thought I was the only one!! I'm always so focused on what I want in 5 years, I don't pay attention to now and when trying to fix this, it is truly exhausting! I also really love alone time as well! Loved this post!

Julie, I'm with you on wandering museums and on working on living in the moment more instead of in the future. Thank you so much for sharing!

Fun. I completely agree with needing to have alone time. I am fine with spending a night or weekend by myself. I loved Moonrise Kingdom, not so much To Rome with Love though. And I could actually spend a whole day in a museum in NYC and not get bored. I'm curious like that.
